Hemerocallis ‘Barbara Mitchell’, commonly called Barbara Mitchell Daylily, looks elegant and is one of the easiest perennials to grow. This perennial has arching grassy foliage that will reach 18 – 24 inches tall and 20 – 24 inches wide. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. This daylily is tolerant of practically all conditions, including urban pollution, slopes, extreme temperatures, drought, poor soil, salt, and black walnut trees. This perennial grows well in full sun to part shade. It is highly adaptable to different soil types, including clay and sand, and adaptable to both dry and moist locations. It is not picky about soil pH or fertility. For best flowering, water Barbara Mitchell regularly during the growing season. Mulch new plants with high quality compost around the root zone to conserve moisture and improve the soil quality.
You can divide daylilies any time of year, as long as the ground isn’t frozen. Remove any dead foliage in early spring before new growth emerges.
