This plant sports spires of purplish-pink, tubular flowers that rise above glossy, purplish-black foliage. While its flowers attract pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies from mid- to late-summer, dark seed heads appear after flowering and add late-season interest. If you’re a bird lover, you’ll also appreciate visits from the hungry birds that these seed heads attract in fall and winter. The Dakota™ Burgundy Beardtongue’s seed pods are also a great filler for cut arrangements! A fast-growing plant, the Dakota™ Burgundy Beardtongue will rise to heights of nearly 12-18 inches, with a spread of 20-24 inches.
This perennial is great for containers, accents and borders. Be mindful, however, as it does not compete well with other plants. While it attracts desired pollinators, it is deer and rabbit resistant. The Dakota™ Burgundy Beardtongue is a low-maintenance addition to the garden. It’s drought resistant, with little need for pruning or fertilizer.
Dakota™ Burgundy Beardtongue Plant Care
The Dakota™ Burgundy Beardtongue can grow in full or partial sun, but will flash its deepest foliage color in full sun. Plant in well-drained soil; it does best in loose, gravelly soil. This beardtongue variety will not fuss over soil pH and tolerates neutral, alkaline and acidic soil. Feed your plant once a year in the fall with an organic fertilizer. Avoid conventional bloom-boosting fertilizers, which can promote too much growth and shorten your plant’s life. Beardtongues are drought tolerant, but appreciate 1 inch of water per week in the summer to support blooming.
Beardtongue doesn’t need pruning, but periodic deadheading promotes rebloom. The foliage can also be trimmed after blooming to freshen the plant up. If desired, you can lightly prune in the fall or spring to tidy its appearance.
Dakota™ Burgundy Beardtongue Plant Spacing
Space these plants at least 20-24 inches apart in mass plantings. Beardtongues do not compete well with other plants, so give them plenty of space. They are well suited for growing in pots too.
