Hibiscus syriacus ‘Diana’, more commonly known as Diana Rose of Sharon, is one of the best pure white flowering shrubs on the market. Its large, white, saucer-shaped flowers smother the shrub from July through October. The flowers are offset by dark green, leathery foliage that stays full and lush during the growing season. This shrub is highly adaptable and easy to grow. ‘Diana’ was awarded a Gold Medal from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.
This shrub has a rounded, compact shape that reaches 5 – 8 feet high. Hibiscus syriacus is deciduous and native to eastern Asia. It is highly tolerant to air pollution, salt, heat, humidity and drought. It is also resistant to deer and disease. ‘Diana’ is a knockout in tropical-themed gardens, or add it to a flowering shrub border, butterfly flower garden, or foundation planting to instantly brighten an area.

This shrub blooms best in full sun, with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day, but tolerates partial shade. It prefers moderately moist, fertile soil, but tolerates poor soil and drought. It is not particular about soil pH, but the soil should drain well. Water ‘Diana’ regularly during the growing season for best flower production. Apply a thick layer of high-quality compost around the base of the shrub, making sure to pull away any mulch from the trunk.
Shape in late winter by cutting branches back to just above a growth node. More severe pruning will result in fewer but larger flowers. It can be propagated with semi-hardwood stem cuttings.

Space these shrubs approximately 6 feet apart on center to provide room for them to reach their mature size. ‘Diana’ can also be grown in large containers, at least 2 feet in diameter, with drainage holes. Size up the container every year or transplant this shrub to the ground.
