Magical® Berry Winterberry is bred for straight, upright stems that load up with bright red berries and are a standout for cutting. It grows about 3–4 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide, staying compact enough for small gardens without losing its winter presence. Unlike looser, wide-arching winterberries, this one holds a clean vase shape even after leaves drop. We like planting it where you’ll see it from the house, because those bare, berry-covered branches carry the view through the cold months.
In the landscape, the berries double as winter food and shelter for songbirds, so the shrub stays busy long after flowering. Ilex verticillata ‘Kolmber’ is a native cultivar that tolerates low fertility and thrives in moisture, including rain garden conditions that thwart many shrubs. Winterberry is dioecious, so you’ll need a compatible male (e.g. Southern Gentleman) nearby for fruit set; plan on one male for every 6–10 female plants. The berry-laden stems can also be used dry indoors and will hold for weeks without sitting in water.

Plant Magical® Berry Winterberry in full sun to part sun for the heaviest berry show. Give it moist to wet, well-drained soil with an acidic to neutral pH, and avoid sites that bake dry for long stretches. Set the plant so the base sits right at the soil surface after watering in.
Water regularly during the first year. Once established, keep an eye on summer dry spells, since drought can cause berry drop even if the shrub survives. A spring top-dress of compost is usually plenty, especially in average soils where winterberry doesn’t need a lot of feeding. It drops its leaves in fall, and the berries carry the display through winter.
Prune in late winter to early spring before new growth starts, focusing on thinning older stems to stimulate strong new canes for next season’s fruit. If you grow it for cutting, rotate your harvest by cutting back part of the shrub each year so you still get berries while renewing growth.

Space plants 3–4 feet apart for a full hedge line, and keep the male pollinator within the same bed or nearby planting so bees can cross-pollinate easily. For a long-term container, use a pot at least 22–24 inches wide and plan to water more often than in-ground plantings.
In the landscape, pair it with sweetspire and ferns for a moisture-friendly shrub border that still looks good after leaf drop. In containers, underplant with vinca for summer coverage and pansies for cool-season color once the winterberry starts its fall show.
